About IGNITE NP

Bridging the Gap Between Education and Real-World Practice

Our Mission

Ignite NP was founded with one clear directive:

To build a generation of clinicians who think critically, communicate clearly, and practice with confidence and integrity.

We create practical, evidence-based continuing education designed by nurse practitioners, for nurse practitioners, covering the clinical readiness, professional systems, and real-world workflows that NP school never taught.

Our Founder

Brendan Tennefoss, DNP, AGPCNP-BC, ACHPN, AFMC, founded Ignite NP after recognizing a gap that no one in NP education was addressing directly. A practicing nurse practitioner with clinical experience spanning primary care, integrative and functional medicine, and hospice and palliative care, Brendan built Ignite NP from the questions he wished someone had answered and the systems he had to build entirely on his own.

His approach combines conventional clinical rigor with functional medicine principles, a perspective shaped by years of treating the whole patient rather than the isolated complaint. That same philosophy drives every Ignite NP course: practical, honest, and built for the realities of practice rather than the ideals of academia.

Brendan's Journey

  • 2011-2014 — Scientific Foundation and Preparation Brendan completes his Bachelor of Science in Biology, '11, before pursuing graduate prerequisite coursework, establishing the scientific foundation that would later inform his integrative and functional medicine approach to clinical practice and entering NP school.

  • 2015 to 2017 — MSN-AGPCNP Program Navigates NP education as an adult learner with limited mentorship and significant adversity. Graduates as an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.

  • 2018 Early Clinical Practice Enters outpatient primary care in a federally qualified health center and begins learning clinical systems, workflows, and professional infrastructure on his own. The gap between clinical training and clinical practice becomes impossible to ignore.

  • 2019 — ACHPN Certification Pursues advanced certification in hospice and palliative care, earning his Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse credential.

  • 2020 — DNP Completed and Metta Wellness NW Founded Completes his Doctor of Nursing Practice while simultaneously practicing, then launches Metta Wellness NW, an integrative telehealth practice specializing in gut health and men's health.

    • The question that would eventually become Ignite NP forms clearly: what would have changed if someone had provided guidance in the beginning?

  • 2023 — AFMC Functional Medicine Certification Achieves certification in functional medicine through the School of Applied Functional Medicine.

  • Building Clinical Depth Continues growing Metta Wellness NW while deepening expertise across integrative medicine, functional medicine, primary care, and hospice and palliative care.

  • 2024-2025 Speaking at Conferences Presents advanced integrative medicine topics at the annual Elite Nurse Practitioner Conferences

  • 2025 — Ignite NP LLC Founded Launches Ignite NP LLC with a mission to build the clinical education, professional systems, and mentorship resources that NP school never provided. The first courses are released covering clinical readiness, compensation strategy, financial literacy, and professional foundations.

  • 2026 — ANCC Accreditation Pursuit Begins Ignite NP begins the formal process of pursuing ANCC accreditation for continuing nursing professional development credit, reflecting a commitment to the highest standard of CE quality in the NP community.

  • Summer 2026 — The Ignite Athenaeum Launched Establishes The Ignite Athenaeum, a private professional community for nurse practitioners built around case discussion, clinical reasoning, peer mentorship, and the deliberate transfer of knowledge from one generation of clinicians to the next.

Brendan's Story

I've been where you are.

During every year of my education I faced adversity, from preceptors and instructors who questioned my path, to colleagues who underestimated my role. The nurses eat their young mentality was not just a phrase. It was my lived experience. As an adult learner I often had limited guidance and no mentor to call.

Once in practice the pushback continued. Nothing I did seemed right in the eyes of clinicians who believed nurse practitioners were less than. I carried the weight of proving myself every single day, not just to others, but to myself.

There were multiple times the mounting pressure, the criticism, the exhaustion, and the isolation nearly broke me. I reached a point where I questioned whether I could keep going. Through therapy, community, and a shift in mindset, I found a way forward.

I have sat in therapy working through burnout and PTSD from a profession that is meant to heal. Over time I reframed that pain into purpose, transforming self-doubt into confidence and survival into leadership.

What came out of that season of my life was not what I expected.

I launched Metta Wellness NW, my own integrative telehealth practice built around gut health, integrative medicine, and men's health. I began presenting at national conferences. I pursued advanced certification in hospice and palliative care and functional medicine. And, I kept asking myself the same question: what would have changed for me if someone had handed me a roadmap at the beginning?

That question became Ignite NP.

I built the courses I had needed and could not find. Clinical readiness, real workflow systems, compensation and contract strategy, financial literacy, coding and documentation, the pharmacology details that are important in practice, and the diagnostic reasoning that only comes from thinking through cases with people who have been there. Not academic theory restated. Not CE for the sake of CE. Practical, honest education built from the realities of clinical practice.

Then came the Ignite Athenaeum, because I also needed a community. A place where clinicians could think out loud, challenge each other's reasoning, support each other's growth, and carry the torch of mentorship forward to the next generation.

This transformation became the foundation of Ignite NP, so others do not have to walk that path alone.

Ignite NP exists because we deserve structured guidance, mentorship, and resources that help us thrive clinically, professionally, and personally. Every course, every resource, and every community discussion is built around one belief: that a prepared clinician is a confident clinician, and a confident clinician changes lives.

If you are a nurse practitioner who has ever felt underprepared, undervalued, or simply unsure of what comes next, you are exactly who this was built for.

Welcome.
